MY STORY

My name is Kelly, I am the sole creator behind the unique jewelry of To Zen And Back. I have lived in Michigan my entire life.  Born and raised in the beautiful upper peninsula, I now make my residence in a suburb of Grand Rapids with my husband, 2 kids and 2 dogs.

I have been a maker my whole life, learning how to knit, crochet and sew at a very young age.  Figuring out how to make things and learning new techniques and crafts has always been a passion.  Turning that passion into a business was a natural step for me.

Having my own business has allowed me to be there for my kids whenever they need me.  My oldest son has Asperger's (a form of Autism) and my younger son has Cerebral Palsy.  Both are terrific kids and I'm hopeful someday they will be able to live independently.  Until then, I am chauffer, advocate, teacher, life coach, Mom and anything else they need me to be.  Being my own boss also gives me time to help my aging parents and be their chauffer, advocate, grocery shopper, daughter and anything else they need me to be.

So, why the name "To Zen And Back"?  My passion to create is my Zen but mostly the name came about because it's a mash up of my son's names, Zach and Ben.  It's a tribute to them for showing me that I have the strength to do whatever I set my mind to.

I discovered metalsmithing in 2016 and was immediately hooked!  It is definitely my biggest passion.  However, just like it has for everyone else, COVID has interrupted life.  Having my husband working from home and my youngest remote schooling for his senior year of high school has meant I can't hammer much!  So, I'm sneaking in making noise whenever I'm able but am also spending time doing some quieter activities.  Namely, soap making and designing knitting patterns.

So, that's the story of why my website is a bit eclectic in it's product scope.  Maybe I have undiagnosed ADHD!  I choose to believe it's just that I have a creative mind.
